What is Biosecurity in Poultry?
This is a hygiene system practiced in poultry farms in order to prevent introduction of avian disease into the chicken house.
Biosecurity is a chain system that start outside the farm and in the farm.
Biosecurity should include the following.
1. Training of staff not to grow or keep an avian species at house.
Staff members must be trained that they are not allowed to grow or keep any avian species at their home. This is because, at home no one monitors any avian diseases, there’s no vaccine program, and if there is an outbreak of any avian disease they will easily carry it to the broiler farms.
2. Vaccination program
Most small scale farmers do not have any program to prevent diseases into the farm. Most farmers lose their chickens at an early stage because the hatchery does not inform them which vaccines used. Most importantly, the disease of the parents of the Day Old Chicks which can be carried over. Therefore is very important to prevent any lossesfrom hidden information. For example, if the parent of your broilers is exposed to Aspergillosis (a fungal infection disease caused by Aspergillus), your broilers are likely to have high mortalities at the first seven days or total loss if there is no vaccine program.
